Mission of the Foundation

Provide the necessary resources to raise community awareness of diseases of the retina and to facilitate dilated eye exams for everyone in central western Virginia area over the age of sixty.

Primary Focuses

  1. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD affects approximately thirteen million Americans and as many as one in four over the age of 65.
  2. Diabetic Retinopathy - Nearly 45% of all diabetics develop a related eye disease.

The problem is that the public is generally unaware of these condition. Studies have shown that fewer than 30 % of all adults are aware of these disease. Most people think that nothing can be done. Effective treatment is available but early detection is crucial.

Goals

  • Educate the general public about all diseases related to the retina.
  • To identify the 10% percent of seniors over the age of sixty who are at high risk of developing advanced stages of Age-Related Macular Degeneration within the next five years so that these high risk individuals may be treated proactively.
  • To promote a general awareness of the eye diseases associated with Diabetes.
  • Educate patients of all ages and healthcare professionals about the advantages of early detection of eye diseases through annual eye exam.
